Babes In Toyland, Hole, Lovedolls, Bootleg, Weatherbell at Club With No Name
Back in the '60s when Mr. Jaaaa-mes Brown was talking about Papa's brand new
bag, he couldn't possibly have imagined Mama's brand-new bag: it's called "Foxcore",
and it's currently sweeping the world. So this show couldn't be
more timely. Foxcore is a whole new, 100-percent chick thang, sorta
created by Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore (see Sept. 1 issue of Sounds), who
defines Foxcore as the new wave of "all-babe" bands that are taking
back the action from what was an all-dude scene. Minneapolis'
"all-babe" Babes in Toyland (whose lyrics were described as "too
cruel" by a writer in these very pages) are one of the front-runners of the
scene, and locals Hole will suck you in like one, and, believe me, there's no
escape. Sung by frontwoman Courtney Love, Hole's single "Retard
Girl" is some of the most unrelenting stuff (lyric sample: "Repugnance
of blood coming out of my limbs does not appreciably differ from vomited
food") I've heard in a long time. And live, they're even gnarlier,
with Ms. Love rolling about the stage like a horny weasel in heat.
